Changes to Employment Standards 2018

Changes to Employment Standards begin in January 2018. Bill 148, the Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act, 2017 is an Act that introduces significant amendments to Ontario’s Employment Standards Act and the Labour Relations Act. Most of the changes to the Employment Standards Act comes into effect on January 1, 2018. Some of the changes in the Act affect the following Employment Standards:

  • Minimum Wage
  • Equal Pay for Equal Work Provisions
  • Overtime Pay
  • Employee Misclassification
  • Public Holiday Pay
  • Paid Emergency Leave
  • Domestic or Sexual Violence Leave
  • Pregnancy Leave
  • Family Medical Leave
  • Parental Leave

By now employers should be ready to abide by these new provisions of the Act and should have made the necessary changes. In addition, updates will need to be made to policies and employee handbooks. There is also a change to the Occupational Health and Safety Act regarding the requirement of some workplaces for female employees to wear high heels while working.
